Since lots of us anticipate being in New York this weekend for Singularity Summit 2009, it seems like a great time to hold a NY-area Overcoming Bias/Less Wrong meetup! Whether you're attending the summit or not, do consider dropping by the 92nd Street Marriott any time after 7PM, where you will find a lively group of rationalists discussing and dissecting the day's events, and the ideas presented by the summit speakers. We'll be meeting in the hotel's internal restaurant, which should be open until well after midnight.

RSVP at the Facebook Group or see this event in Google Calendar.

This is an excellent opportunity to announce that I recently organized an OB/LW discussion group that meets in NYC twice a month. We had been meeting sporadically ever since Robin's visit back in April. The regular meetings only started about a month ago and have been great fun. Here is the google group we've been using to organize them:

We meet every 2nd Saturday at 11:00am and every 4th Tuesday at 6:00pm at Georgia's Bake Shop (on the corner of 89th street and Broadway). The deal is that I show up every time and stay for at least two hours regardless of whether or not anyone else comes.

I've been meaning to post this for a while but I don't have enough Karma...

Have a point of karma for Doing Something. The world needs people who Do Things.

Something like this? Should totally be on the first page, regardless of how much karma you have. Just pick somebody with plenty of karma, reply to one of their comments or PM them, and ask them to post it -- we totally will.

I hope you cleared this with Vassar or Salamon or someone to make sure it's not stepping on anything...?

Salamon suggested it, though I haven't spoken to Vassar.

ETA: Also cleared with hotel management.

Sounds good. The last one was fun :-)

Is the date already decided? There's a NY-area Singularity Salon meetup Saturday 10/3 7 PM.

Oh, that sounds exciting. Let's hope there's a way for these to coexist.

ETA: The Salon page seems to imply that that event is only going until 8PM -- is that right/close to right?

Really? Where does it say that?

in the .ics metadata available under the 'export to calendar' link

ETA: but that could be because they only specified a begin time and the software defaulted to a duration of 1 hour.

(Incidentally, you know you've set op a system of measurement at least half-way sanely when people just go ahead and default to one of things.)

Cascio:

This is, in essence, counter-programming for the Singularity Summit

I say we counter-program him right back. :P

Hey, I am a gay singularitarian who is currently in the closet. It would be cool to meet another gay singularitarian at the meetup tonight. Message me on LW if you're interested.

The last talk of the Summit is scheduled to end at 7:30, and the talks have been going late during the day. So I wouldn't expect anyone from the Summit to show until 8pm.

Edit: I'm scheduled to attend a speaker's dinner after the last talk, so I won't make it to the meetup until late.

Oh, not sure if this is the best place to ask, especially at the last second, but anyone else going to be staying at the Holiday Inn - Manhattan View?

(ended up there in part because I booked hotel and stuff a bit too late)

The Singularity Summit page doesn't mention a 92nd St. Marriott. It mentions a Marriott Courtyard East at 866 Third Avenue.

...because the 92nd street marriott is full.

Note that the event will be in the Y, not at the Marriott, and it ends Saturday at 7PM, so most people will be in the Y, not the Marriott, at 7PM.

I ended up booking in a different hotel, but yeah, I plan on showing up for the meetup. :)
