Quite right, and it reminds me of this description of the value of consciousness: it's a way of learning. Once you've learned to do something unconsciously, you'll do it far better than anyone still at the stage of acing it out self-consciously. Therefore the main evolutionary benefit of consciousness may have been the general ability to learn new skills and concepts.

I don't remember where this is from - can someone attribute? (I'm not saying that's the entire value of consciousness, but it sounds like reasonable.)
