What kind of leeway are the fellows given in pursuing their own projects? I have an AI project I am planning to work on after I finish my Phd; it would be fun to do it at SIAI, as opposed to my father's basement.
Less leeway than that. We want fellows, and others, to do whatever most effectively reduces existential risk... and this is unlikely to be a pre-existing AI project that someone is attached to.
Although we do try to work with individual talents and enthusiasms, and group brainstorming processes to create many of the projects we work on.
