You're conflating normative and positive views of science. Hanson believes in the Signalling model, but I'm not sure he thinks this is desirable, whereas you make it sound like the senior scientists view it as desirable.

They (mostly) act as if they find it desirable, whatever their far mode preferences happen to be.
