Crackpots are wrong contrarians.

(Not really. There's this whole weird complex of personality traits that goes along with that.)

Someone who's correctly contrarian on one issue is likely to be a crackpot on another. You hope that, by averaging contrarians together, the crackpot opinions will be averaged out.
