I don't completely understand the original post: What do you mean by "high status"?
It is a completely different question why is it hard to have a good conversation with a congressman or with a famous string theorist.
I don't have much experience with the first categories (economically, politically influential people) but with scientific people (in natural sciences, mathematics and engineering) my experience has been that high status individuals (university professors, researchers) are in average much more fun to talk to than grad students. At least, this was my subjective personal impression.
