In general our ideas of the world are based on a very small sample of evidence, limited by our senses and imagination. Good sci-fi can counteract this by getting us used to the idea of X; bad sci-fi can do the opposite (this is more or a societal danger, I doubt people here would be damaged by some of the more stupid sci-fi images).
