I parse it as "Many people avoid changing their minds by changing the subject as a way of avoiding thinking about the point that should cause them to do so."

Just... a lot of failure involves changing the subject at the right (wrong) time. It's most noticeable as a repeated rhetorical event, but I'm sure it happens in silent thought all the time.
