This seems badly phrased. It is normally previous events that cause observations. It is not clear what it means for a reason to cause something.
Good point. That sentence structure was a carryover from Finnish, where you can say that reasons cause things.
Would "Any given observation has many different possible causes" be better?
Yes, that would be better.
