For something more coherent and in-depth, A Mathematical Theory of Communication, Shannon (1948), which is credited with pioneering modern information theory, impressively remains a fantastic introduction to the subject.

One year later, in 1949, "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" was reprinted as "The Mathematical Theory of Communication". Which shows how rapidly people recognized that this came from The Book.
