Einstein was not a theist. From a private letter he wrote that was auctioned off last year:
the word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.
He was spiritual in the sense that many scientists are spiritual -- Sagan-like awe at the wonders of the universe -- but that's a far cry from believing in God.
Not that it makes much difference whether 1 scientist did or did not believe in God, but it's unfortunate that this particular falsehood never seems to die.
