I suspect that you are seriously overstating the difference between the status quo position and Taubes position. Taubes may be guilty of the same overstatement (positioning an argument as boldly contrarian probably helps attract attention and sell books).
I don't think there is anyone who disagrees with the statement that "too much fat is bad for us". Does Taubes really think that eating any amount of fat is acceptable? I assume Taubes would frown on a 100% fat diet. It seems that Taubes would agree with the government that "too much fat is bad".
You seem to be implying that this statement is anti-dietary fat, when in fact, it is discouraging having high levels of bodyfat, which Taubes seems to agree with, since he blames obesity (implying obesity is bad) on high carb diets.
