Your essay was the first thing that came to my mind after reading this post. I think the core argument is the same, and valid. It does seem to me that people vastly underestimate what computer-supported humans are capable of doing when AGI becomes more feasible, and thus overestimate how superior AGI actually would be, even after continously updating its own software and hardware.

That sounds a bit of a different subject - one that I didn't really discuss at all.

Human go skill goes from 30kyu to 1 kyu and then from 1 dan up to 9 dan. God is supposed to be 11 dan. Not that much smarter than the smartest human. How common is that sort of thing?
