There was a post I can't find which addressed this point: that rationality has worked so well that society can now support a vast number of people acting irrationally. And so rationality or irrationality is no longer a matter of survival or even practicality, but of social signaling: you get ahead in many social environments more with irrationality than with rationality.

tl;dr: IT PAYS TO BE STUPID.

Anyone got the link to hand? It should go in this essay.

That would be extremely interesting to read (though it sets my mind going in all sorts of depressing directions). If anyone can track this down, I'd be very interested in reading it.
