I've read them both, which sort of answers that.

Edit: Not to be dismissive! I enjoyed them both, as fiction and as well-reasoned explorations of the subject. In fact, it's possible the first time I started thinking about this was when reading the short story Permutation City is based on.

Interesting. I was going to link to permutation city but found this thread when checking to make sure I wouldn't duplicate someone else's comment... but then it didn't work to clarify things for you which leaves me kind of stumped, and furthermore blocked from exploring how I'm stumped by problems with spoilers.

Actually this comes up often enough that I think maybe it would be worth making a discussion area to talk about it... how about right here :-)
