I know it sounds a bit "folk knowledge-y," but... some groups suck and some don't. By "suck" I mean dysfunctionally stumble toward a barely-known common goal with maximal internal friction. A good skill for dealing with this is the hardest one to acquire: acceptance. Examined more closely, acceptance looks like anxiety management, meaning: "This situation is making my body feel like it's filled with angry bees. How can I minimize this feeling until I find a group within which I naturally function well?"
