A new article in Mother Jones, The Science of Why We Don't Believe Science, discusses this phenomenon and references Haidt. (The article does frame the issue in terms of the stereotypical American political dichotomy, but it's worth reading nonetheless.)

Also, I'm wondering why this post never got promoted to the front page. It's part of a sequence, addresses human cognitive function... it seems like a prime candidate to me.
