Helsinki meetup Saturday 9.4 (cancelled)

2 [deleted] 03 April 2011 07:56AM

Time: Saturday 9th of April from 15:00 onwards

Place: Cafe Picnic at Yliopistonkatu 5

This is the second Helsinki meetup. The last one was successful, going on for three hours with around ten people there. Like before, lurkers and newbies are extremely welcome, as well as people who don't speak Finnish but do speak English.

This time, User:Erebus thought we could talk about at least these topics:

  • concrete benefits of having read Less Wrong
  • optimal career or study choices.

but suggest more.

EDIT: The original time was a bad time, so the meetup at that time is hereby cancelled. What time would be better?

Aside: May I suggest that all "meetup" posts be removed to their own thread (or perhaps a calendar on a separate portion of the site) so that our RSS feeds aren't littered with irrelevant meeting appointments?

Most of us aren't going to be able to make more than one meetup every few months, whether because the locations or times are inconvenient. With the plethora of meetup posts then, few, if any, will be relevant to most of us,

Perhaps a wiki page for each area with a regular meetup would be appropriate - then any changes to the page would be advertised via "Recent Wiki Edits". (Alternately, a Google Calendar widget could be embedded in the page with a minor template change.)

I made a page for Helsinki meetups in the wiki: http://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Helsinki_meetup_group

People who are interested in attending can subscribe to the Atom feed with a RSS reader to receive updates.

That is, assuming this actually was a good idea and will get used for further meetup coordination.

Well, it's resulted in it showing on the page now. We might want to ask the site admins to put a "Meetups" link in the site's top-level menu, going to a wiki (category?) page listing the various meetups' location pages. There are certainly enough meetups happening for that to make sense.

Actually, somebody doing a monthly "Meetups" thread, analagous to the monthly quotes thread, would probably also be a good idea.

Of course, this entire discussion probably belongs on one of the Improving Less Wrong threads, but I'm not sure how to find them...

Just move it ahead a week, to Saturday 2011-04-16?

Won't be able to make this one, since it's at the same time as my housewarming party. But will attend the next ones.

I think an e-mail list for Finnish LW meetupers might be a good idea.

A mailing list is a fine idea. With the amount of traffic on the front page these days, a dedicated mailing list might be a more reliable way of contacting less active readers. Assuming, of course, that we can get them to sign up on the list :)

Unfortunately I'm unable to participate in the meetup this time, as I'll be out of the country for quite some time starting on friday.

I can't make it before mid-August, so waiting for me is probably not a good idea.

I'll be there.
