It is the fear of nihilism, the fear that without their moral compass they might suddenly want to do evil, deplorable things because they'd be A-okay.

Fear of nihilism? Couldn't it just be guilt, at how you could act like that one really wonderful person (everyone knows one), but just don't feel inclined?
