Hm, well they're not looking for coders now: Please remember that, at this present time, we are looking for breadth of mathematical experience, not coding skill as such. (Source.) Additionally, I emailed Michael Vassar a description of a rough plan to develop my ability to write code that runs correctly on the first try and he seemed uncertain about the value of implementing it. (Of course, maybe he's uncertain because the other plans of mine I'd shared seemed just as good.)
Eliezer is certainly a smart guy, but I haven't personally seen anything indicating that his coding skills are especially high-level. $95K is probably a reasonable salary just because we want Eliezer to stay happy, but if I had written the sentence
it would have a "probably" in it.
He can easily make that working for a hedge fund or a bank, you don't need that great programming skills if you know some math. Speaking from experience.
Even without a degree? That's really interesting. Is it all of the hedge funds or just a limited subset?
I guess Eliezer could probably leverage his reputation for six-figure employment.
Probably without a degree if you have either some connections or chutspah. I can't say for all, some might have some strictly stupid policies.
