As looking glass self theory states,1 we are shaped by how others see us. This is largely due to the experience of having people react to us in certain ways.

Could you elaborate on how to use this in a positive way? Presumably in getting people to act toward you in a certain way you can motivate your behaviour to change, but it would seem practically very difficult to do so in normal settings.
