If you really want to save lives, you better donate to people who do more than write papers. Aubrey de Grey's institute might be a better start.
The bottom line is, the SingInst is just a huge money drain. It really doesn't do anything useful, and all it ever produced is a bunch of papers. It actually does something worse, namely subsidizing a slacker-genius like Yudkowsky, who really should find better uses for his mind than armchair philosophy about "friendly AI" when we don't even have the knowledge to build an AI with the intelligence of a 10-year-old. Mr. Yudkowsky can actually build not one, but several intelligences greater than probably 95% of humans on the planet - all of them almost guaranteed to be friendly. He simply has to shave that ugly beard, stop being so nerdy and actually meet smart women just like him. His IQ is probably above the Ashkenazi already-high average, so having, say, 10 children and directing each on careers in every field that can potentially eliminate human aging and death will probably do more for humanity than endless philosophizing ever will.
Ditto for the rest of you who know you are smarter than the rest of humanity, but still allow mentally-challenged people to outbreed you, which results in decreasing the proportion of people on this planet whose brains can actually understand science and rationality.
The actual bottom line is that, as a potential confounding factor that might prevent a singularity from ever happening, dysgenic decline is even less of a threat than global warming. But thanks for playing!

2011 has been a huge year for Artificial Intelligence. With the IBM computer Watson defeating two top Jeopardy! champions in February, it’s clear that the field is making steady progress. Journalists like Torie Bosch of Slate have argued that “We need to move from robot-apocalypse jokes to serious discussions about the emerging technology.” We couldn’t agree more — in fact, the Singularity Institute has been thinking about how to create safe and ethical artificial intelligence since long before the Singularity landed on the front cover of TIME magazine.
The last 1.5 years were our biggest ever. Since the beginning of 2010, we have:
In the coming year, we plan to do the following:
