In addition to everything thats already been said: when the median rationalist is still struggling to get a date the idea of winning popularity contests and infiltrating the domain of charismatic, glad-handing net-workers is preposterous.

First, it really isn't. I'm making a generalization about a group I'm familiar with. Second, I don't struggle to get dates.

More importantly, if works such as "The Thick Of It" are to be believed, politicians actually don't get much tail at all, on average, what with being married to the job.
