All of this is surprisingly effective in overcoming my akrasia, esp. Nisans way, so on top of my donation I wanted to subscribe monthly- unfortunatly it seems that a credit card is neccesary for that. Any ideas how to circumvent this? I do not want to get a (regular) creditcard.

By the off chance that you'd happen to have a Visa Electron, PayPal will accept it as if it were a credit card.

Paypal monthly donation can do it using a registered bank account (direct debit), or any other source accepted by Paypal.

Well, no, Paypal does not want to. "You have got to register a Creditcard, direct debit is not possible".

Weird. They tried really hard to force me to use my bank account, and previously limited my credit card donations because I didn't have a bank account attached.

I guess they want as many sources of your money as possible before they let you do much with them.

Something to do with me being european? My bank account is as of yet unauthenticated.
