I find it extremely difficult to retain presence of mind when confronted by a person whose beliefs I imagine I can other-optimize. I develop tunnel vision immediately and ignore conversational cues or body language that should alert me to their discomfort (or worse, their unreceptiveness). I feel like this is my worst interpersonal problem.
In retrospect, I ask myself "were you acting with intention, or alleviating anxiety?" It's usually the latter.
