Are there any discussions about the art of choosing good reference classes?

Not doing it, or averaging other reference classes into a combined model. Specifics are more important.

Viet Nam was closer to the right reference class than WWII, I think.

That was far too specific to be a reference class, it's a reasonably analogous case.
