No idea. The neurocritic (linked in post) says "The origin of the glial dominance myth is not clear at all." Again, I suspect it's because it makes the brain seem relatively more complex.
Purves doesn't seem to be as misinformed even the one from 2008 states: "Glia are more numerous than neurons in the brain outnumber them by a ratio of perhaps 3 to 1." But I think I've hear a one or two professors say "around 3-10:1".
