My experience is that people who are not involved in biology, tend to oversimple biology a lot, if you try to explain to people the concept of [PSP] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postsynaptic_potential), that enables you to have a very dynamic "voting system" that decides weather a neuron should fire or not. People sometimes tend to go "Wow I had no idea one neuron could be that sophisticated".
