I'm very fond of the castling analogy-- people do lose track of context, and tying group identity into choices which are useful some of the time makes it worse.
I'm not so sure about the Lascaux cave paintings. On one hand, we get to think about how wonderful their age is, but the people who made them would have had much less visual art competing for their attention, so the painting might have been much more special for them.
