I actually got hit pretty hard for that today, but I think that was mostly about how vague (practically information-free) my comment was.

I find that if I want to just say "interesting" then if I say "Interesting. <then first thing that pops into my mind/>" then it usually goes across fine, regardless of how much value that thing happens to be. ;)

Interesting. Does it really have to be the first thing that pops into your mind, or is the third or fourth generally better?

The third or fourth thing may be better but the first is sufficient for avoiding "downvote empty approval" triggers.
