What am I working on? Only the most efficient commit-avian-genocide-with-one-stone drumming exercise EVER:

  • Take away all parts of your kit except the kick and snare.
  • Put a practice pad over your snare. Muffle your kick with an old sweatshirt or towel.
  • Set up your double kick pedal and anchor it well (my slave pedal has a bass amp sitting in front of it to keep it from sliding away).
  • Open your copy of Gary Chester's The New Breed to the ten pages of melody lines.
  • Set your metronome to 40ish BPM, with 16th note subdivisions.
  • With heels down, begin playing 16th ghost notes with your feet, accenting the melody lines from the book. Lead with your right foot to start. Play quarter notes with your hands at normal volume.
  • Go through all ten pages in this way, then start over, this time leading with your left foot.
  • Notice how hard it is to sit up straight, as if your feet are pulling the rest of your body down. Begin to slowly correct this.
  • Repeat while playing offbeat quarter notes with your hands, then 8th notes, then offbeat 8th notes, and on and on.
  • Become aware that you have wildly improved full-body independence. Play crazy double kick stuff for the first time.

Yes, I invented it. You're welcome.
