Computer vision is suspiciously lacking in practical spinoffs, even though people have been studying it for 40 years.
Really? Flashy stuff like Word Lens is rare, but stuff like more prosaic OCR, increasingly automated consumer photography, and face-recognizing CCTV seems to be economically effective.
I certainly agree that there are unsolved difficulties in computer vision with probably profitable solutions which may be Hard Problems, though.
