On counter-signaling, how not to do:

Police believed the trafficker thought that being so obvious would deter the authorities.

I find it highly unlikely that this is the whole story. Surely the police are not licensed to investigate a car based solely on its vanity plate and where it was parked...

Maybe the guy had been reading too much Edgar Allan Poe? As a child, I loved "The Purloined Letter" and tried to play that trick on my sister - taking something from her and hiding it "in plain sight". Of course, she found it immediately. ETA: it was a girl, not a guy.
