Hypothetical scenarios in conversations are used to win a debate, not to make predictions or seek truth. In most cases of personally conversations we don't have acess to relevant data, or time to process.
In papers maybe they should be more realistic, but people who use hypothetical scenarios like trolley cases tend to favor intuitions most part of time.
