Don't forget that some people will actually be hurt if you hug them, most likely because they suffered from a traumatic incident in the past.
I have not suffered from a traumatic incident, and would still have trouble handling that much emotion.
I would allow that this most direct potential problem is avoided by Nyan's "Opt-in" caveat.
True, but you can still get Alicorn's issues again - "let's all hug NewMember, except NiceGirlWhoGotRaped" doesn't sound terribly comfortable for all involved, either. Good protocols can probably solve that, but that does get complicated quickly.
For sure, the awkwardness of doing something that one or a few are unable to do, and when that activity is already sensitive individuals for the excluded.
That is indeed the motivation
