The novels Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson bring up this question and proposes an answer, offered here in a simple rot13.com cypher for those who haven't read the books yet.

That is also addressed in the novels, something I might have added previously.
That is not exactly a new idea, many stories have used that. And Harry Stine's A Matter of Metalaw had that as an automatic consequence of the immortality treatments.
