This is actually a really good point that I hadn't considered much. This is strongly in favor of your conclusion (Academic Papers Are A Terrible Discussion Forum). It is perhaps a less strong argument against the usefulness of papers in general. They serve several roles other than discussion, perhaps the best being consolidation.
