I suspect that many of the estimates are made by people who suffer from biases towards excessive skepticism, and/or are motivated to find a way to not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, preferring shorter term gains.

The two estimates I linked to are both from people who have signed up for it; the second one is Robin Hanson's. On the spreadsheet, as far as I know the only estimate from someone who has not signed up is mine.
