I find that threatening hypothetical violence against my interlocutor can be a useful rhetorical device for getting them to think about ethical problems in near mode.
I'm going to hit you with a stick unless you can give me an example of where that has been effective.

For all the whining I do about how LWers lack a sense of humor.... I absolutely love it when I'm proven wrong.
Do you really feel like LWers lack a sense of humor? LWers have posted some of the funniest things I've ever read. Their sense-of-humor distribution has heavy tails, at least.
Yeah, I'd say that's a fair assesment.
