I think it'd be nice to have a (probably monthly) "Ideas Feedback Thread", where one would be able to post even silly and dubious ideas for critique without fear of karma loss. Rules could be that you upvote top level idea comments if they sound interesting (even if wrong), and downvote only if you're really sure that it's very easy to find out they're bad (e.g. covered in core sequences). Could also be used for getting feedback on draft posts and whatnot.
The plan being that questionable ideas are put into their own thread for feedback, instead of being potentially turned into questionable posts. At the same time, it would give people a place to be wrong and get feedback without fear of repercussions and hopefully without forming negative associations with doing stuff on Less Wrong.
(Potential downsides include that it could steal from of other, more filtered, content locations if people feel it's a less risky place to post things, that posting in the thread may potentially be seen as low-status, and that someone reading recent comments may vote in not the intended way or feel burdened with reading less filtered content. I feel that these are probably outweighed by upsides.)
I like this proposal. In the past, people (including me) have complained that LW doesn't get enough posts on topics where there's likely to be a lot of controversy or high variance in an item's score, 'cause people don't like getting downvoted more than they like getting upvoted.
If it's worth saying, but not worth its own post, even in Discussion, it goes here.
