political opinion: While singleton government is certainly an area of interest, it looks implausible to me that we can get there from here without either war or massive worldwide propagandistic/educational effort. If your goal is to reduce existential risk, I think this is not a cost-effective way to do it.

Of course, if your goal is to study fascinating research questions in this area that may also help reduce existential risk, then go for it!

It does seem that our ability to influence these events is limited... But we'd have a better idea after a research project...
