Umm... have you met a religious person? As soon as you mention anything about evidence or tests, they'll tell you why they won't/don't work. These sorts of excuses are especially common if you talk about testing the efficacy of prayer.
I think he may have had trouble avoiding them, even if you don't count the mirror...
