This might be an especially easy category of bias to identify. Just ask yourself if you feel proud that this belief associates you with some group with which you want to be associated. If so, weaken your confidence in this belief.
Up to and including my belief that the scientific method is the best approach to understanding the world?
Absolutely, yes. No question that part of the reason we believe that is in order to identify with our tribe. I personally am prepared to reduce it by three orders of magnitude, from 1-epsilon to 1-1000*epsilon.
