If you prefer a happy monster to no monster and no monster to a sad monster, then you prefer a happy monster to a sad monster, and TsviBT's point applies.
Whereas if you prefer no monster to a happy monster to a sad monster, why don't you kill the monster?
Only if your preferences are transitive.
If you have any sort of coherent utility system at all, they will be.
A better point is that "no monster" just means you're shunting the problem to poor Alternate You in another many-worlds branch, whereas killing a happy monster means actually decreasing the number of universes with the monster in it by one.
