A priori, I'd say any enlisted/NCO would prefer being an officer (if they didn't have to work for it, etc.).

That strikes me as an awfully sheltered, possibly even Jewish thing to say. I've heard this is true in the Israeli army, elsewhere not so much.

While I suspect I know what you mean, I'm left somewhat agog here at the implication that "Jewish" is an extreme form of "sheltered."

Given that in my experience and by what I've heard, self-deprecation is a common element in Jewish humor, yes.

To the extent that the framework in this post is true, it is possible that some people are put off from the requirement to be agenty. As to whether Jews think that way less or more than others ... hmmm....

And as to whether I am sheltered from non-agentiness: I see a lot of non-agentiness, no shortage of that.
