I have written a lengthy response that deals with only one of the points in the critique above, the suggestion that, as a whole, the Effective Altruist movement is pretending to really try, here: http://lesswrong.com/r/discussion/lw/j8v/in_praise_of_tribes_that_pretend_to_try/
My main argument is that pretending to try is quite likely *a good thing(, in the grand scheme of EA.
Disclaimer: I support the EA movement.
