yup, exactly one thing is going on in our brains - a vast sea of elementary particles and fundamental fields interacting. It's very inconvenient to talk about things this way, so we can refer to the gross effect of these interactions in the brain as thoughts, neurons firing, conciousness, chemical reactions, etc, as it becomes covenient to do so.

It's also inconvenient that going from the brain doing work to neurons firing doesn't necessarily mean we've done any reduction in the causal sense, it could also mean we've just described exactly the same physical events on different levels of magnification, which is what I think you're trying to say here.

I not sure what you mean exactly by "causal reduction" as opposed to a magnification. Surely the rules governing neural activity are simpler than descriptions of thoughts - even if the number and complexity of these neural interactions have little hope of human comprehension.
