The key used for encryption has been lost.

Did you mean the key used for decryption? And could you elaborate on the significance of this?

I was thinking of a symmetric cipher, so the same key would be for both encryption and decryption. The significance of "the key is lost" is that it's no longer feasible to distinguish the resulting data from random bits.

Gotcha, thanks.
