In case you're confused by the terminology like Peter Hurford was: "research associate" at places like FHI and MIRI means "unpaid research collaborator" not "full-time staff member." It does, however, indicate a strong level of interest in a researcher, and I expect researchers eventually hired by MIRI will first spend some time as MIRI research associates.
