Probably a very rare adverse effect: I knew someone who found that modafinil would make him sleep for 18 hours. Sorry I don't know the dose.

Immediately after, or as catch-up sleep after a long modafinil-fueled waking period?

Immediately after the first time he tried it. It caught him by surprise. I think he tried modafinil a second time to check and got the same result.

He did look more rested than usual, so it may have been better as well as more sleep.

I think anyone would look more rested than usual if they had just slept for 18 hours.
